Chapter 99 - The Nature of an Expedition

Prev | TOC | Next We returned to the Bridgehead before sunset and took care of our personal affairs. Naturally, we also bathed to cleanse ourselves. Running water washed away mana, and bathing proved effective against mana sickness. That was another new discovery we had made. We also took turns preparing meals. Unlike cold, hard military rations, a hot meal gave everyone the strength they needed for the following day. Warm soup and a meat dish. Everyone's spirits were noticeably improving. Excellent, excellent. At last, we could relax a little. Fatigue and mana sickness drained one's stamina to the limit. Walking all the way to that place had been incredibly grueling. Moreover, it had been the soldiers with lower internal mana reserves who suffered the most severe symptoms of mana sickness... In that environment, was mana sickness our greatest enemy? We had to find a way to deal with it, no matter what. Our mission was of great importance, but that was no excuse for working o...

Chapter 7 - The Hero Teaches Two People Survival Skills

Prev | TOC | Next [Eliana's POV] One day, on our day off, my master called for us just as we had finished breakfast. Luca was with me, too. When the two of us stepped outside the Seabreeze Inn, we found Master carrying three fishing rods over his shoulder. "Are we practicing swordsmanship today?" "Lunch practice." "...Lunch?" "Because I used to fish whenever I ran out of food." "While you were tra...

Prev | TOC | Next The carriage stopped a short distance before the bookstore. The three-story bookstore was built of black bricks, and guards armed with spears and swords stood on either side of its double doors. The security seemed a little excessive, but books were still expensive here in the royal capital. Printing was still limited to methods akin to woodblock printing, and mass-printing technology had yet to become widespread. As a result, even a small, thin book cost at least a silver coin, while thicker books and specialized volumes could set one back several large silver coins or even gold coins. That was why large bookstores always employed multiple guards. As Dahlia stepped down from the carriage, Volf offered her his hand with even more gentleness than usual. Dahlia placed her hand in his as though nothing had happened. Of the two, both determined not to mention what had happened earlier, Volf was the first to speak. "...Dahlia, is there any particular book you're...
